I took up a little book from one of my kids today - passing it around during testing wasn't too smart! I read it (of course)! I found some interesting things... one of my best most respectful students wrote in it about their LA teacher "man pinche maestra es una prostituta like nos movio y estamos muy enojadas. still estamos borachas y drogadas see ya'll next year" -- well, not knowing much spanish, I google translated the passage to find her calling my coworker an F***ing prostitute and she makes them angry and want to do drugs...
I was a little upset by it - knowing my class period was next in "the book" I was a little nervous to see what they said about me...
"In Ms. Haines classroom its fun she is my favorite teacher because i fight with her and its so funny but I learn a lot of stuff whit her (ILY) no homo miss! :P" It makes my heart melt to hear things from kids - even when they don't know I'm going to see them! The spelling and lack of punctuation shows this child obviously doesn't pay attention in ELA class, but nonetheless is sweet! Also found it humorous that ILY is followed by "no homo miss" HA HA - in 6th grade they are worried about being homos :)
there was a lot of other things in this book that worries me about some of my kiddos - the fact that summer is approaching and they will most likely be let unattended more now than in the past to get into trouble... My PRE-AP kid drawing pictures of smoking pot and others drinking. One of a girl on a pole with 5 "men" watching saying "baila Odalis Baila" (which according to google translate means dance) another picture of a girl drinking beer by a pole with "men" holding dollar bills out toward her... how about a girl at a stop sign with a guy in a car by it holding money out...
I'm appalled at which kids have created this book... RG - my sweetest kid in 2nd period, OA - one of the brightest minds in pre-ap...LL sweetheart in 2nd... EV - well, she's a toot, but I never imagined these things would come out of her!
